Huawei is the world’s biggest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment. It has customers in 140 countries and its equipment is used in more than half of Europe’s 4G high speed mobile phone networks. But it has come under scrutiny for its lack of corporate transparency and possible links to China’s People’s Liberation Army. The US Congress sees it as a national security threat. A recent report by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence released October 8, 2012 warns that if companies like Huawei become significant players in US telecom, it poses a serious risk of cyber espionage.
