“Republican lame-duck state legislators in Michigan voted this week to gut a bill that would’ve raised the state’s minimum wage and given workers access to paid sick leave.

The state’s outgoing Republican governor, Rick Snyder, could soon sign the legislation, the culmination of a GOP strategy that activists say is a straight-up subversion of the democratic process, as well as possibly illegal.

‘We consider it just an undermining of democracy, the will of the people, and a slap in the face to all of the work that we did,’ said Danielle Atkinson, the Founding Director of Mothering Justice and one of the activists who fought to get the measures on the state’s November ballot. ‘I’m incredibly disappointed. I’m upset. Angry. And just sad about all the people that we are wanting to help.'”

  1. And while they're killing the planet and robbing you blind they put all their energy in telling you the problem is immigrants or liberals or millenials or some other … insert minority here, they really want you to hate "the others" because if you start to figure things out, they know they'll be in trouble.

  2. Hey where are all those comments that used to begin" I'm an African American and I voted for Trump I refuse to follow the plantation mentality of those who are sticking with the Democratic Party" some n*** we're joining the Klu Klux Klan if Klan will let them .

  3. I know white people's favorite go to line is "why does everything have to be about race?" Well the Trump made it about race when he asked African Americans who voted Democrat in the past "what do you have to lose?"

  4. Hey on to a different subject if Americans are truly tired of being dragged into Wars behind Israel and wanted more balanced Middle East policy we could the the answer's obvious we have to let Bernie Sanders as president. Because it appears that only someone of Ashkenazi Jewish descent can criticize Israel. Because in one of the democratic debates between Hillary and Bernie Bernie made of a statement and if he wasn't called out on it for being anti-Semitic he said" Benjamin Netanyahu isn't always right" now could you have imagined if a white Gentile or and African-American would have made that statement. they would accuse him of going full Farrakhan.

  8. Because Cenk, the Democrats aren't any better than the Republicans. You can rant and rave all you want about how the Dems are better, but prima facia, they are just as corrupt and beholden to the neoliberal economic model as the Republicans and, in fact, aid and abet trickle down at every opportunity. They aren't the party of the workers and haven't been since the 1970s when the Baby Boomers betrayed the New Deal and replaced it with the Third Way. The fact you think that the Democratic Party can be reformed is both sad and amusing. Grow up and face the reality that we only have one party in America- The Democratic Republicans. And until neoliberal economics are thrown back on the dust heap of history, the insanity of the one party system in America will continue.

  10. If you try to raise minimum wage too much, corporations will probably find a way to automate jobs so they don’t have to hire as many people. Raise minimum wage in smaller increments.

  11. The fuckers on the right will always say raising wages will hurt the economy, but what about such fast growth/inflated bonuses for the top..that hurts the economy more than anything.

  12. Time for Michigan voters to organize (repub & demo) and march on the state capital. Or you can just take the screwing and do nothing in which case you get what you deserve.

  15. These increases to the minimum wage have had the opposite effect for low wage earners, companies have reduced staff and cut hours. In addition consumers are going to start seeing service charges at restaurants, which is going to drastically reduce the pay of tipped workers in the restaurant industry.

  16. They are also trying to pass a ton of lame duck legislation, Republicans in michigan are a bunch of sore losing babies. They gerrymandered our state and we just passed a ballot measure that won’t allow parties to redistrict, so they know they’ll never win again. Meanwhile, they gutted education to provide over $2 billion in tax cuts for corporations, pushed charter schools, and gave Betsy DeVos to the rest of the nation. Michigangsters are pissed and not illusioned by these assholes!

  17. why cant districts just be drawn computationally?  We could avoid any kind of bias or gerrymandering completely  if we just used a method similar to creating Thiessen polygon type thing.  Isn't there a way that someone can use GIS to just split a state up into districts in a way that each district represents the same number of people, while minimizing the physical geography of the district.  This would make each district normal shapes rather than those weird amorphous things.  I am not population geography expert nor am I an expert in GIS, but it seems like something that can be done pretty easily by a person who knows the stuff well.

Hard: the land we call our home.
Push to keep the dark from coming,
Feel the weight of what we owe.

This: the song of sons and daughters,
Hide the heart of who we are.
Making peace to build a future,
Strong, united, working till we fall.
